THE POEM PRINT
In landscape poetry, mountains and rivers are the most commonly lauded, along with the moon, trees, flowers, and birds. This print takes six stanzas out of six landscape poems and presents them in seal script, an ancient form of Chinese calligraphy commonly found on bronzes, pottery, seals, and stone engravings. Poets include Zuo Si 左思 (Western Jin Dynasty), Xie Lingyun 谢灵运 (Liu-Song Dynasty), Wang Wei 王维 (Tang Dynasty), Li Bai 李白 (Tang Dynasty).
Landscape poetry is closely connected to landscape paintings in spirit and essence. It is often the case that Chinese poets are painters, and painters are poets. There is a saying that “in a landscape painting there is a poem, and in a landscape poem, there is a painting.” This print is an ode to the relationship between poetry and painting that has spanned centuries, and the poetic spirit that underlies all genres of Chinese artistic expression.
