The PANORAMA Print is inspired by the mountain peaks and rich colors from the Northern Song Dynasty landscape painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains.

Close up of A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains

Painted on a 12-meter long silk scroll, this masterpiece is the most representative work of Chinese blue-green landscape paintings. The pattern of the print is inspired by the lush, undulating mountain ranges that rise and fall across the scroll, gracefully twisting among mist-covered waters, multi-layered waterfalls, pavilions, and bustling fishing villages.

The colors of the dress are inspired by the depth and resplendence of blue, green, and pale brown pigments in the painting. To apply the color, rare gemstones such as malachite, agaphite, lazurite, and ochre were grounded into powder and used as pigment, creating the luxurious and bright coloration on the painting.

A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains is the only surviving work of the Northern Song Dynasty artist Wang Ximeng (1096-1119), who was only 18 years old when he finished the painting. Not much is known about him except that he was an imperial court painter and was personally mentored by Emperor Huizong (who is famous for his artistic accomplishments). Wang was likely a native of southern China as the landscape contains features typical of regions south of the Yangtze River.
